Step-By-Step Ordering Instruction

So....you've decided you like SpecRail's aluminum fencing. Great! Now, the question is, "How much fencing do I need?" and, "How do I determine what components I need and how many of each component(s) do I need."  We highly recommend purchasing our Fence Design Software. It's only $29.95 and will save you countless hours of drawing, doing the math, etc. Click Here for more information on Do-It-Yourself Fence Design software. It you decide not to use the software, keep reading. Even if you use the software, the following step-by-step instructions are a useful checklist!

Most of this work is usually done by a fence contractor. But, because you have decided to be a "do-it-yourselfer" you do this preliminary work and you will save a significant amount of money!

Step 1 - Sketch Your Plan

Start off with drawing a sketch of your fence on a piece of paper including measurements as you go. For best results, we recommend using graph paper and drawing the sketch to scale but a rough draft is sufficient if you have experience with these types of projects. Once the sketch with measurements is completed, mark where each corner post, end post, and gate post will be located. Now it's time identify your line posts. In ordering 6 ft ( 42in ) width panels, your line posts should be marked every 6 ft on your sketch. Finally, mark where the gate(s) will be located. Your sketch plan is complete so let's figure your order.

Step 2 - Figure Your Order

Count the number of corner posts, end posts, line posts, and gate posts separately and record the total of each one. We recommend two gate posts with a single gate to increase the sturdiness to both sides. Double gates require at least two gate posts.

Residential grade panels are available in 6 ft width only. Divide each run by the width 6 to determine how many you need. For example, if you have one straight run of 60 ft and a second straight run of 30 ft, calculate as follow. Divide the 60 ft run by a 6 ft panel which equals 10 panels. Then, divide the 30 ft run by a 6 ft panel which equals 5 panels. 10 panels + 5 panels = 15 total 6 ft panels. If your fence line divided by "6" is not even, round up. Another words, if your fence line is 64' you would divide 64 by 6 = 10.6. You would order 11 panels. Then, when you install your panels you will cut one fence panel. Detailed instruction on how to do this is included in your installation manual which will come with your fence order.

How tall do you want your fence? Several heights are available ranging from 3 foot to 6 foot panels. Record the number of panels and the height you selected.

Be sure the width measurement of your gate(s) was not included when figuring the total number of panels. Gates are ordered separately which leads us to where we are now. Both single gates and double gates are available. Single gates are available up to 16 foot and may be used as both walkway and driveway gates. Double gates are essentially two single gates and available up to 20 foot but please note that the hardware does differ between a single and double gate. All the required hardware is included with each gate order and the hardware will be defined by whether you order a single or double gate. Take this time to calculate the number of gates your need. If you have a 6 foot space for a gate, you could order a 6 ft single gate or a 6 ft double gate. Do you want a fence gate that is taller than your fence panels? Please note the height difference if so.
